From Catwalk to Gavel: Designer Handbags Set to Shine at Hansons Auctioneers Upcoming Auction

 |  By Kirsty Myatt

In the ever-evolving world of fashion, few accessories hold their value—and mystique—quite like the luxury designer handbag. Far more than functional, these iconic pieces are long standing symbols of style, craftsmanship, and cultural prestige. From the structured elegance of a Hermès Birkin to the timeless charm of a Chanel Classic Flap, luxury handbags have become investment pieces, not just fashion statements.

Once strictly personal treasures, high-end handbags are now commanding serious attention on the auction circuit, where rare and pristine examples are fetching record-breaking prices. Earlier this year, a Chanel Classic Flap Bag in black quilted caviar leather with gold hardware sold for £3,700. Meanwhile, Fendi’s much-loved Peekaboo Bag has also found success, achieving between £2,500–£3,500 in recent UK sales.

Hansons Auctioneers Ladies showing off the collection of designer handbags

It’s in this context that Hansons Auctioneers is proud to unveil a truly special consignment: a single-owner collection of 19 designer handbags will feature in this month’s Antiques & Collectors Auction, which will commence on the 15th May 2025. The collection was consigned during a specialist valuation event with vintage fashion expert Notty Hornblower, held at our Derbyshire saleroom. The vendor, from Darley Dale, began acquiring these coveted pieces in 1999 with the intention of building a stylish yet practical pension pot. Most of the handbags were purchased directly from the Hermès boutique in Manchester and have seen little to no use—making this one of the most pristine and desirable collections to come to market in recent years.

Hermès Birkin 40 Togo in Black

Highlights include a Hermès Birkin 40 Togo in black, with double handles, silver hardware, and the original dust bag, estimated to fetch £12,000–£13,000. A Hermès Victoria bag in etoupe clemence taurillon leather, complete with padlock, keys, and booklet, carries an estimate of £1,200–£1,500. Meanwhile, a large Fendi Selleria Peekaboo in supple black calfskin leather is also expected to achieve between £2,500 and £3,500.

Italian craftsmanship also takes centre stage with a broad selection of Bottega Veneta handbags—including the highly desirable black textured calfskin Angle bag, estimated at £600–£800, along with Olympia and Milano designs in varying shades of brown, beige, and black.

With demand for designer handbags at auction soaring, this is a golden opportunity for collectors, investors, and fashion lovers alike to acquire luxury at its finest. These bags are not only beautiful—they represent tangible, wearable assets with proven market value.

If you have treasured items of your own, Hansons’ team of experts is here to help. We offer specialist valuations across a wide range of categories—from jewellery and silver to fine art, toys, militaria, and more.

Our Derbyshire saleroom is open for walk-in valuations Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, or for those who prefer a personal touch, complimentary home visits can be arranged.
