This July, art lovers and collectors are invited to delve into the creative world of one of Cornwall’s most distinctive artistic voices. Hansons Auctioneers Cornwall is honoured to present “The Studio of Victor Bramley”, a dedicated single-artist sale taking place on Friday 11th July 2025 at 10am at the Harbour Saleroom in Penzance.
The auction features an exceptional collection of over 220 lots, offering a rare and intimate glimpse into the life, work, and legacy of Victor Bramley (1933–2014) — a self-taught painter whose contributions to the Cornish art scene spanned more than five decades. The sale includes original oil paintings, drawings, sketchbooks, mandalas, studio furniture, spiritual relics, and personal ephemera, most of which have remained unseen in private hands since the artist’s passing.

From Sheffield to St Ives: A Life in Paint
Born in Sheffield in 1934, Bramley’s early life was defined by working-class grit and natural artistic flair. A teacher once remarked that “Victor could draw better with his gas mask on than the rest could without.” In 1959, he followed his creative instincts to Cornwall—a decision that would define his life and career.
Settling first in St Ives, then Newlyn and Penzance, Bramley immersed himself in the region’s thriving post-war art movement. He was elected to the St Ives Society of Artists in 1961, rubbing shoulders with the likes of Barbara Hepworth, Bernard Leach, and Patrick Heron. Despite having no formal training, Bramley exhibited regularly with the society and carved out a quiet but respected presence in Cornish artistic circles.
A spiritual man, he lived simply, painting by day and practising yoga and meditation by night. His work reflects a deep inner world—ranging from expressive coastal landscapes and abstract compositions to intricate mandalas influenced by Eastern philosophy.
