A 19th-century cello bow, vintage instruments, and rare records take centre stage in a sale that hits all the right notes.
Collectors and music lovers were treated to a showcase of extraordinary lots at Hansons Auctioneers’ Derby July Music & Film Memorabilia Auction, held on 2nd July. The event drew strong bidding from across the UK and beyond, reflecting a booming global market for iconic music, film and instrument memorabilia.
Among the top performers was Lot 105, a late 19th-century W.E. Hill & Son cello bow, detailed with white metal and mother-of-pearl and accompanied by a 1981 valuation letter. With an estimate of £600–£800, it soared to a hammer price of £1,600, demonstrating the lasting appeal of traditional craftsmanship.
Another standout was Lot 106, a JAYDEE Supernatural Bass Guitar (Session Model 01071) with case and strap. In excellent condition, it achieved £900 against an estimate of £500–£700.
Instrumental success continued with:
- Lot 110: A Selma bass clarinet with fitted case, accompanied by a wooden clarinet — estimated at £150–£250, it achieved £600.
- Lot 104a: A 1920s Pan America Elkhart saxophone in a fitted case, which sold for £520 (est. £200–£300).
- Lot 103: A Sonola accordion, estimated at just £50–£80, hit a surprising high note at £300.
On the vinyl front, Lot 41 featured four original 7-inch Pink Floyd singles — including Arnold Layne and Point Me at the Sky. Estimated at £80–£120, the set achieved a hammer price of £150, highlighting continued demand for early pressings from legendary artists.
This latest success follows a series of strong results for Hansons in the music and memorabilia category. In late 2024, a first pressing of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon sold for £560 (est. £350–£450), and in March 2025, a John Lennon and Paul McCartney signed programme from a 1963 concert in Bournemouth achieved £1,250 (est. £600–£700).
