Pinxton porcelain, one of Derbyshire’s most charming ceramic legacies, is set to take centre stage at Hansons Auctioneers on the 8th July 2025 in a heartfelt sale of the late Geoff Wood’s treasured collection, lovingly cared for by friend and fellow enthusiast Elaine Gregory.
Founded in the late 18th century on land at the head of the Cromford Canal, Pinxton Porcelain emerged under the eye of businessman and painter William Billingsley and the entrepreneurial John Coke, son of the Reverend D’Ewes Coke. Billingsley, trained at the prestigious Derby works, became famous for his delicate floral painting and quest to perfect the porcelain recipe—reportedly sourced from Zachariah Boreman.
The factory produced elegant wares from around 1796 until its closure in 1813, leaving behind a legacy of beautiful, finely painted porcelain. Today, it continues to enchant collectors and historians alike, with dedicated enthusiasts keeping its spirit alive.
Geoff’s journey into the world of Pinxton began in 1993, when he and his wife Sue received a single piece as a 25th wedding anniversary gift. That gift sparked a decades-long passion. Over the next 30 years, Geoff travelled the country in search of Pinxton pieces, building what has become one of the most admired private collections of its kind.
“Geoff was my guru,” recalls Elaine Gregory, who has cared for the collection in recent years. “He took me under his wing and taught me how to distinguish true Pinxton from pieces that merely looked the part. Every time I see a piece, I smile and think of Geoff. I feel I’ve only been looking after it for him.”
Auctioneer and Director of Hansons Auctioneers Charles Hanson affectionately dubbed Geoff “Pinxton” whenever he saw him in the saleroom—a reflection of Geoff’s knowledge, dedication and enthusiasm. When Sue Wood heard the collection would be sold through Hansons, she was thrilled. It was Geoff’s favourite auction house, and Elaine hopes to honour his legacy with a sale he would have been proud of.

The auction will be overseen by Hansons’ Connoisseur Ceramics Consultant, Gillian Finney, whose expert eye and passion for porcelain ensures each piece is carefully catalogued and contextualised for today’s collector.
