Gold Shines at Hansons Auctioneers Derby February Antiques and Collectors Auction

 |  By Kirsty Myatt

Gold took centre stage at Hansons Auctioneers February Antiques and Collectors Auction, held from February 13th to 18th at their Derbyshire saleroom. The sale, which attracted bidders from all over the world, saw gold items far surpassing their estimated values, highlighting the growing appeal of the precious metal in today’s economic climate.

The auction offered a variety of items across four days, each focusing on different sectors: Day 1 featured Silver, Jewellery, and Watches; Day 2 highlighted Ceramics, Glassware, and Metalware; Day 3 focused on Clocks and Furniture; and Day 4 wrapped up with Pictures, Works of Art, and Collectors’ Items. But it was clear from the results that gold was the real star of the auction.

As we head into 2025, gold prices continue to climb, driven by a combination of global economic uncertainty and inflation concerns. Geopolitical tensions, notably the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, have caused significant market volatility, prompting many investors to seek the stability of gold as a safe-haven asset. Central banks around the world have also been increasing their gold reserves, which has added further pressure to already high demand. This has had a marked impact on the auction results, with several gold lots selling well above their estimates.

One of the standout lots was Lot 110, a 9ct gold charm bracelet, estimated to fetch between £650 – £750. The bracelet, which featured a flat curb link and seven 9ct gold charms, sold for an impressive £1,010. The result reflects the strong demand for well-crafted gold jewellery, with buyers eager to secure unique, high-quality items.

Another notable sale was Lot 173, a matching 9ct gold crescent link necklace and bracelet set, estimated at £700 – £800. The set, weighing 48.6 grams, achieved £1,150, a strong result that suggests the continued popularity of gold jewellery in particular. Gold jewellery has long been sought after not only for its beauty but also as a solid investment in uncertain times.

Lot 174, which featured three 9ct gold Byzantine link chains, was another highlight. Estimated to fetch between £1,500 – £2,000, the chains ultimately sold for £1,760, reflecting the rising prices and strong demand for quality gold pieces. The chains, which weighed a total of 86.7 grams, were particularly attractive to buyers looking for both a statement piece and an investment.

These results suggest that now is a particularly good time for anyone looking to sell gold items. Whether it’s unwanted jewellery, old family heirlooms, or coins, the strong demand for gold means sellers could receive higher prices than expected.

As Hansons Auctioneers prepares for their March Antiques and Collectors Auction, the increasing popularity of gold suggests it could continue to play a major role in future sales. For those looking to sell or buy in the current market, it’s a good time to pay attention to how these trends evolve.

Helen Smith, jewellery specialist at Hansons Auctioneers, has been an important part of Hansons jewellery section, offering her expertise to ensure accurate valuations. The results from February’s auction show just how much gold is commanding attention, with many buyers eager to secure pieces that can serve as both a beautiful addition to their collections and a sound investment. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or just starting out, gold remains a key player in the world of antiques and collectables.
