Yorkshire calling! Charles Hanson to launch new antiques valuation event in Pontefract

 |  By Kendal Cooper

Renowned auctioneer and antiques expert Charles Hanson is heading to Yorkshire to help people turn unwanted treasures into auction windfalls.

Charles, who makes global headlines with his antique finds, will be offering free valuations at The Kings Croft Hotel, Pontefract, on Thursday 15th August, from 10am-noon – and no appointment is necessary.

It will be the first of four consignment events at the venue in 2024, all hosted by Charles, an expert in antiques and collectibles and owner of Hansons Auctioneers. He can assess anything and everything – and he can’t wait to get started.

Charles, who has 54,000 followers on X thanks to a 20-year TV career, said: “I’m really looking  forward to meeting the people of Yorkshire, one of my favourite counties. Over the years, I have made some fascinating finds in the area and I know there’s much more to discover.

“Don’t be shy, whatever it is I would love to see it. I always give an honest assessment. So many people own items that can excel under the hammer. We regularly uncover surprises. For example, one gentleman tentatively brought in a box of objects inherited from his parents. Hidden among items of relatively little value was a rare Chinese wine ewer which looked like a small teapot. It sold for £390,000.

“Of course, not everyone owns scarce Chinese porcelain but many people have something of value and simply don’t know it.  Everything from militaria, music and sports memorabilia to gold coins, toys, books and jewellery make hundreds or even thousands of pounds at auction. Gold and jewellery is particularly sought after as gold prices have hit record highs.

“Every week I uncover items that have been languishing in lofts, garages and wardrobes, often inherited, that spark global bidding battles. Now it’s time for Yorkshire to make waves in the world of antiques.”

Hansons, which has seven salerooms across the UK, has sold everything from Queen Victoria’s bloomers for £4,500 to a Sooty glove puppet for a record-breaking £14,000. Then there was the Chinese vase, used as a doorstop, which made £650,000, Faberge flowers which achieved £400,000, and a Harry Potter first edition which soared to £68,000.

Charles Hanson will host antique valuation and consignment events at The Kings Croft Hotel, Wakefield Road, Pontefract, West Yorkshire, WF8 4HA on 15th August, 18th September, 17th October and 26th November.
