The Carpenters are remembered fondly by millions of music fans and a rare piece of memorabilia relating to the brother and sister musical duo has emerged.
Hansons’ December 8 Music Auction includes a Carpenters’ employment contract signed by Karen and Richard Carpenter. According to Hansons’ music specialist Claire Howell, items like this rarely come to light.
Lot 54 also includes an original Carpenters’ gold disc marking the sale of more than 500,000 records. The frame is damaged but it’s an original Recording Industry Association of America disc, estimate £600-£800.

Karen (1950–1983) and brother Richard (born 1946) were a hugely talented American vocal and instrumental duo renowned for their distinctive soft musical style. They first performed together as a duo in 1965 and went on to achieve major success with songs like We’ve Only Just Begun. Sadly, they are also remembered for the premature loss of Karen. She died from heart failure brought on by complications of anorexia nervosa aged only 32. Those who adored her voice still mourn the loss of her talent.
