Unique Cartier rings – designed to connoisseur’s specification – set for auction in Oxfordshire

 |  By Kendal Cooper

Storied jewels, including a bespoke set of Cartier rings and the original design sketches, will be the star lots at Holloways Banbury in September.

Consignments are invited for the Banbury Fine Jewellery, Watches, Silver and Objets D’Art sale, which will take place at the Parsons Street saleroom on September 25, 2024 to sit alongside a unique set of rings by the iconic jewellery company.

The Cartier rings were made to the specifications of a distinguished Lincolnshire lady in 1987 and comprise an emerald and diamond flower ring, set with eight round brilliant cut diamonds, to an estimated 0.65 carats, and four pear-shaped emeralds, to a total of 0.50 carats.

To accentuate the look a later ring was produced by Cartier for the same client, set with three marquise diamonds and four marquise emeralds.

The lot includes both rings, the original design sketches and correspondence between the client and the Bond Street store, complete with two iconic red leather tooled Cartier boxes.

The rings were made for an aunt of the current vendor who had been a single professional woman, who also cared for her own relatives. The aunt delighted in going to the New Bond Street store, first of all to design the flower ring, then to create the complementary piece.

Jewellery Specialist for Holloways, Mel Lee-Patrick FGA DGA said: “These Cartier rings were produced for an exceptionally hard-working woman who enjoyed the finer things in life. She enjoyed her visits to Cartier, flying on Concord and other moments of expensive delight when she had the opportunity – the luxury offering balance to her well-lived life.

“This sale is an opportunity for owners of fine pieces of jewellery to see their items elevated alongside important jewels in sale at a tried and trusted Oxfordshire saleroom. With our customer base of trade buyers and private collectors, with international buyer access via our online bidding platforms, we know we can help them achieve excellent prices for their exceptional pieces.”

As a passionate afficionado of antique jewellery, Mel (below) also hopes the sale will be a showcase for exceptional pieces of history.

She added: “We have already consigned a capsule collection of Georgian jewellery which was brought together by a lady antiques dealer who was passionate about securing the best examples of antique jewellery when they were less prized and more likely to end up being melted as scrap.

“The pieces primed to go in this sale form a part of her legacy to the antiques world.”
