Ultra rare Intrepid whisky set – inspired by biggest bottle in world – set for auction

 |  By Kendal Cooper

Hansons’ Jan 26 Wine, Whisky & Spirits sale includes Macallan 1989 32 Year Old – The Intrepid complete set, a limited edition Explorer’s Edition featuring 12 x 50cl bottles plus miniatures | £22,000-£30,000

These ultra rare sets came about in the wake of The Intrepid, officially the world’s largest bottle of Scotch whisky. Standing over 1.8m tall, the record-breaking bottle contains 311 litres of fine single-malt whisky (43% abv), distilled at The Macallan Distillery in Scotland in 1989 and bottled by independent bottler Douglas Laing in 2021. It sold for £1.1 million at auction.

The Intrepid project was dedicated to the spirit and experience of exploration and adventure, hence the bottles feature images of great explorers such as Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

The exclusive liquid used to fill that record-breaking bottle was used in a small number of exclusive bottle sets including the one set for auction.

These comprise a collection of 12 bottles, each filled with the remaining 32-year-old The Macallan whisky. Each set includes a replica of the main bottle design along with individual versions dedicated to each of the explorers associated with the project. Auction catalogue due live Jan 20, 2023.
