Treasures from The Old Rectory in Lincolnshire set to fascinate bidders in May

 |  By Kendal Cooper

A fascinating array of antiques and historical treasures will be offered when the entire contents of a rural property go under the hammer.

On May 21 Hansons will auction, on location, the contents of The Old Rectory, a property hidden away in a pretty valley in the Lincolnshire Wolds. It holds an eclectic mix of items amassed over decades which reflect the lives and interests of a successful family over several generations.

For example, the dining room has a particularly handsome Scottish mahogany long case clock (lot 60 estimate £500-£800) dating from the early 19th century, the dial signed W Robb, Montrose.

A 19th century four-piece ormolu mounted and inlaid ebonized salon suite (lot 36, £500-£800) would provide the ideal seating for listening to a recital on lot 8 – a Bechstein baby boudoir grand piano, retailed by Harrods Ltd at the same estimated price.

Meanwhile, the cellar holds a rustic oak, arts and crafts-style farmhouse dining table (lot 133, £500-£800) with an attractively water-washed top.

The family’s links to the legal world, law and justice bears witness to a number of fascinating and rare prison and police-related items. Lot 129 (£100-150) includes 18 Victorian period inquisition documents, circa 1845, including those for the City of Peterborough and also The Liberty of The Hundred of Nassaburgh (County of Northampton). Verdicts such as accidental poisoning or wagon accidents bring the period to life.

There is also a collection of 51 late Georgian/early Victorian keys (lot 71 estimate £70-£100) on an iron ring, possibly those of Peterborough Gaol used by turnkey David Bowker of the House of Correction 1833-1844

The Contents of The Old Rectory in Lincolnshire will be sold on May 21. Catalogue due live May 13. Bidding/catalogue platforms: www.hansonsliv.co.uk | www.the-saleroom.com
