The tale of Valentine’s Day traces back to the 3rd century, during the reign of Emperor Claudius II. Legend has it that the emperor, who sought to bolster his army by forbidding soldiers from marrying, executed two priests, both named Valentine. One of these priests, while imprisoned, fell in love with a young woman and sent her a heartfelt letter just before his execution, signing it “from your Valentine.” This romantic note birthed the timeless sign-off that remains in use today.
As the story goes, one of the priests defied the emperor’s decree, secretly marrying couples to spare husbands from being sent to war. For his noble act, he paid the ultimate price, and his martyrdom was later honored by the Catholic Church with the establishment of St. Valentine’s Day.
Adding to the legend, it is said that St. Valentine wore an amethyst ring engraved with Cupid’s portrait. This may be the very reason that the Amethyst, a gemstone symbolizing love, healing, and positive energy, became associated with the month of February. Revered by many cultures, including Tibetans, Amethyst is known for its mystical properties and comes in a spectrum of hues, from light lavender to deep purple, sometimes even with red or blue tints. The stone’s distinct coloration is attributed to impurities such as iron, found in places like Brazil, Asia, and the Far East.
