An iconic example of Japanese artistry is set for auction in Derbyshire in the shape of a bold and bright silk panel awash with floral beauty. Cherry blossom, chrysanthemums and doves create a feast of colour on a deep blue background.
The seller said: “My great-grandfather bought it in 1904 at Bradford Great Exhibition and it has been in the family ever since.”
The embroidered 70in x 85in panel, with blue tassels, is late Meiji Period, circa early 1900s. It demonstrates the skill and attention to detail of Japanese needle workers. The braiding on one side has come unstitched but the embroidery is intact and the colours vibrant. It is being guided at £300-£400 in Hansons Auctioneers’ September 26 Fine Art sale. However, it could easily exceed that due to the demand for high quality antique textiles from the Far East.
