Scottish Whisky Fans Tee Up for a Very Special Sale

With golf fans glued to the Open this weekend, Scottish whisky lovers with a passion for the game will be teeing up for the sale of a remarkable drinks collection.

Some 50 limited-edition bottles are due to go under the hammer in the Hansons July Specialist Wine, Whisky & Spirits Auction on 29th July, each linked to the game of kings.

Set to be the top seller is a Johnnie Walker Blue Label commemorating the Ryder Cup in Gleneagles in 2014. 

Housed in a presentation case and labelled 1027 of 2352, the bottle is estimated at £180–£280. It features an image of a golfer, Gleneagles Hotel and the official Ryder Cup logo.

The collection, amassed by a member of St Andrews Golf Club, includes 14 bottles of relating to the home of golf, including “The Sixth” a Glen Moray single cask, made by the St Andrews Whisky Company, which has an estimate of £65-£115.

Three bottles of 10-year-old single malt, called the “Spirits of St Andrews”, celebrate golfing heroes each with links to the famous Fife club, the trio has an estimate of £120-£220.

The first, dubbed “The Original Three”, dated 2015, features bottle artwork by David Joy depicting three pioneering golfers: Allan Robertson, Tom Morris Sr. and Tom Morris Jr. who significantly shaped the early history of golf at the club. Old Tom Morris was born in Saint Andrews was a professional golfer who advised the layout of the course.

The other two bottles are called “Three popular past champions” and “Modern day American champions”, including Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus. 

10 bottles in the sale relate to The Open, including one celebrating the last time the tournament was played at Royal Portrush in 1997.

Made by Loch Lomond Whiskies, known as “the official spirit of The Open” a 19-year- old bottle commemorating the 148th Open, when staged at the world-renowned County Antrim club, has an estimate of £100-£140.

And, as no collection would be complete without a bottle of Macallan, the sale includes a number of bottles by the distillery including a 14-year-old 100th anniversary bottle marking the Moray Open, in Lossiemouth in July 2005, with has an estimate of £130- £180. 

Hansons’ wine and whisky specialist, Stuart Palmer, said: “The sale brings together two iconic Scottish pursuits – golfing and whisky. It is a collector’s dream and the perfect toast to golf’s greatest week!”

Also appearing in the sale are 72 golf ball-shaped miniatures, all celebrating golf’s most famous competition – The Open.
