Two magnificent model steam engines built by a man who achieved his dream while battling cancer are set for auction.
Bidders will be tempted by a Savage Brothers Ltd – Engineers Lynn England engine in red livery is guided at £10,000-£15,000 while ‘The Burrell Traction Engine’ in grey has an estimate of £15,000-£20,000.
They were built by the late John Else, pictured below, at a workshop at his home in Castle Donington, Leicestershire – though the challenge came about in the saddest of circumstances.
His daughter said: “My dad built the grey steam engine (4inch Burrell) in one year from a kit when he found out he was diagnosed with terminal cancer. He was a very clever and strong-minded man who always wanted to build his own steam engine.
“He was a marine engineer and built many narrow boats and was very well know in the boating community.
“He died in November last year at the age of 73. He always loved steam engines. He used to go to all of the steam fairs, taking me as a small child.”
Steve Fulford, valuer at Hansons Auctioneers, said: “These engines stand as a tribute to John’s immense talent, determination and bravery. He was passionate about building these stunning machines.
“Both have recent boiler certificates which means they can be steamed up and enjoyed in time for this year’s summer fairs.
“They are 4in scale models which means they are a third of full size. Both are in immaculate condition and glorious to behold. It would have taken countless hours to make them. They deserve to be seen and enjoyed.
“Because they are so large and heavy, viewing will be held by appointment at their current location near Castle Donington in Leicestershire. Potential buyers will also need to arrange collection from there.”
The steam engines will be offered in Hansons Auctioneers’ April 25 Toy and Live Steam Auction.
