Whether you like to play rock guitar or step back in time with a concertina musical memorabilia sales are a rich stomping ground for enthusiasts.
As well as vinyl record collections, autographs, posters and other ephemera associated to music makers, these auctions include instruments, both contemporary and classical.
For example, our June sale saw a Cort MGM-1 Matt Murphy signature electric guitar, Les Paul scale, believed to be one of only 78, make £230 from a £120-£150 estimate. And in 2021 a battered tambourine used by rock star Liam Gallagher sold for £3,600.
But classical and antique instruments strike a chord with bidders too. For example, in 2018 a Lachenal Edeophone a century-old concertina went to auction with a guide price of £1,000-£1,500.
Plus, in 2021 a Voight violin achieved £850 after nearly ending up at a charity shop. Arnold Voigt (1864-1952) was a student of renowned German violin maker Heinrich Theodore Heberlein Jr. (1843-1910).
Music specialist Claire Howell and classical instrument valuer Derrick Hale can assess instruments and entries are invited until August 31 for Hansons’ September 21 Music and Film Auction. Claire will offer free valuations, by appointment, at Hansons, Heage Lane, Etwall, Derbyshire, on August 10 and 24, 11am-3pm. Derrick will be at the same venue on August 5 and September 2, 10am-noon.
