Restored Sock Knitting Machines to Feature in Day 3 of Hansons’ June Three-Day Antiques & Collectors Auction

 |  By Kirsty Myatt

An extraordinary collection of vintage sock knitting machines, carefully restored over many years by a passionate collector, will be offered on Day 3 of Hansons’ Derby June Three-Day Antiques & Collectors Auction, taking place on Monday 23rd June.

This is the second and final instalment of a remarkable private collection, comprising approximately 28 machines, along with an extensive range of original machine needle sets — many compatible across different models. These mechanical marvels represent an important piece of textile and industrial history, with strong appeal for collectors, restorers, and museum curators alike.

The machines were discovered by Hansons Toy Specialist Steve Fulford during a home visit originally arranged to assess a large railway collection. Upon arrival, Steve quickly recognised the historical and collectable value of the knitting machines, which had been lovingly restored over many years by the client’s late father.

“It was a wonderful surprise,” said Steve. “The machines were tucked away, but it was clear they had been someone’s true labour of love. The restoration work was meticulous. I immediately felt they deserved the chance to be appreciated by a wider audience.”

The first half of the collection, sold in April, achieved an impressive £12,000 across 26 machines, far exceeding expectations. The client, a returning Hansons customer, was thrilled with the results — admitting they hadn’t expected many to sell at all.

Now, the remaining machines are ready to go under the hammer, offering a second opportunity to acquire a unique part of Britain’s textile heritage.
