A vintage football find has rekindled memories of one of Tottenham Hotspur’s greatest seasons of all time.
A collection of 60-year-old matchday tickets, unearthed by Hansons Auctioneers, turn the clock back to a very special football season in 1960-61.
It marked a golden moment in Spurs history – the season they won The Double. They became the first club in the 20th century to win both the First Division title and FA Cup in 1961. It had been more than 60 years since the feat was previously achieved by Aston Villa in 1897.
The Spurs tickets relate to 22 fixtures played during their unforgettable 1960-61 season, one of the finest moments in the London club’s trophy-packed, 137-year history.
The 60-year-old tickets, which are expected to appeal to Spurs fans across the world, have a guide price of £600-£800. They are due to go under the hammer on August 19 in Hansons’ Sports Memorabilia Auction.
They include a ticket for Spurs’ match against Sheffield Wednesday on April 17, 1961, a game which saw them clinch the First Division title.
That was an iconic moment in an iconic season for Spurs. On May 6, 1961, they also lifted the FA Cup trophy after beating Leicester City 2-0 with goals from Bobby Smith and Terry Dyson.
Sadly, an FA Cup final ticket isn’t part of the collection but it does include tickets for fixtures against Everton, Arsenal, Bolton Wanderers, Manchester City, Cardiff City, Fulham, Dynamo Club (USSR), Birmingham City, Burnley, Blackburn Rovers, Charlton Athletic, Arsenal, Crewe Alexandra, Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Sunderland, Newcastle United, Chelsea, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest and West Bromwich Albion.
Head of Hansons’ sports memorabilia department David Wilson-Turner said: “It’s rare to see such a fantastic collection of football tickets as fans usually discard them after a game.
“The fact that these tickets mark such an important season in Spurs’ history make them extra special. I would expect Tottenham sports memorabilia collectors across the world to be keen to acquire them.
“Spurs fans are well looked after in this particular sports auction as we have other Tottenham tickets within the sale dating back to the 1950s and 60s. They all came from a large collection of football memorabilia including more than 200 tickets which will be sold within eight lots.
