Rare and Notable Stamps Set to Feature in Derby June Stamps & Philatelic Auction

 |  By Kirsty Myatt

Hansons Auctioneers is pleased to announce its Derby June Stamps & Philatelic Auction, taking place at 1pm on Thursday, 26th June 2025 at our Derbyshire saleroom. The sale will offer a carefully curated selection of British and international stamps, presentation packs, and First Day Covers, providing a strong opportunity for collectors and investors.

Continued Strength in the Philatelic Market

The stamp market remains robust, with sustained interest from UK and overseas collectors. British stamps — from classic Victorian issues to modern commemoratives — continue to hold global appeal, and premium examples continue to achieve strong prices at auction.

Featured Lots

Among the notable entries for the June sale are:

  • Lot 73 – PUC £1
This well-preserved 1929 Postal Union Congress £1 stamp features St George and the Dragon and a portrait of King George V. Designed by Harold Nelson, a celebrated black-and-white artist, it was originally produced to impress delegates at the Postal Union meeting in London. The example on offer is in unused, fine condition with its original gum intact — a rare find for a nearly 100-year-old stamp.
    Estimate: £300–£400
  • Lot 83 – Presentation Packs
A substantial group comprising approximately 140 Royal Mail presentation packs from 2015 to 2023, including popular themes such as Flying Scotsman, Rolling Stones, X-Men, and Tutankhamun.
    Estimate: £500–£600
  • Lot 78 – Olympic & Paralympic Gold Medal Winner Sheetlets and First Day Covers
This lot includes a complete set of unaddressed First Day Covers commemorating the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Gold Medalists. Given the rise in demand for Olympics-related material in recent years, this is expected to attract considerable interest.
    Estimate: £180–£240
  • Lot 76 – GB Prestige Booklets
An immaculate collection of 62 GB prestige booklets, all sourced directly from the UK Philatelic Bureau. Titles include Fools and Horses, Flying Scotsman, Star Trek, and Victoria — all in pristine condition.
    Estimate: £400–£600
  • Lots 35 & 36 – Railway-Themed First Day Covers
Two themed collections of railway interest, including Traveling Post Office issues and Buckingham-illustrated railway covers. These offer an attractive entry point for collectors of both philately and railway history.
    Estimate: £100–£150 each
