Men who fought for their country and women who cared for them will be remembered thanks to remarkable historical finds set for auction.
Among lots shining bright in Hansons Auctioneers’ November 13 Medals and Militaria Auction is a superb First World War double gallantry medal group. Featuring a Military Cross and bar, it was awarded to Major Arthur Samuel Warren, estimate £1,000-£1,200. From the same family comes a four-clasp Crimea War casualty medal given to Robert Warren of the 21st Regiment, £800-£1,200.
The sale also includes something Hansons rarely sees, a pair of WW1 medals awarded to a women from the Voluntary Aid Detachment. Mildred Moss-Flower served as a nurse in the UK and Africa, £60-£80.
The same auction offers a fascinating WW1 album kept by fellow Voluntary Aid Detachment Nurse Maude Alice Lineham (1883-1965). While working at Derby’s Spondon House Hospital, Derbyshire Royal Infirmary and Leicester Royal Infirmary during the 1914-18 conflict, the Derby nurse encouraged soldiers to contribute poems, thoughts and sketches.
One serviceman recuperating in the DRI wrote his first-hand account of a famous WW1 Christmas truce when British and German soldiers put down their weapons to chat, exchange gifts and play football. The album, estimate £400-£600, has gained media coverage worldwide. It will be interesting to see what it achieves.
