Dr Richard Halliday, Head of Curated Ceramics, shares top lots in what he describes as a ‘phenomenal ceramics sale’, held on September 14, 2022 at Hansons’ saleroom in Banbury, Oxfordshire.
He said: “The sale of 405 hand-picked ceramics was a great success with pre-sale interest being especially keen and bidding likewise. The sale consisted of a great variety of British, Continental and Asian ceramics spanning four centuries of production.”

A superb and scarce Minton majolica game pie dish, c. 1870, (main image). It is beautifully modelled with two foxes stalking ducks around a naturalistic fern and ivy surrounding. The lid has a toad stool knop, all hand-painted. Impressed marks to base. 39 cm wide. Sold to an overseas buyer for £4,200 hammer
An early 19th century blue and white transfer-printed Spode Indian Sporting series large platter, c. 1810. It is marked to the underside and printed with Dooreahs Leading Out Dogs. 47 cm wide. Sold to a private collector for £640 hammer.
An extremely fine early 20th century Stevenson & Hancock Derby porcelain titled and armorial cabinet plate, c. 1916. The face is hand-painted with a titled view of Barrow Hall, Derbyshire, and the raised gilded border has a central hand-painted armorial crest. Marked to the underside. 22.5 cm wide. Sold to a private collector for £620 hammer.
An early 20th century Royal Crown Derby porcelain part dessert service, possibly W E J Dean, c. 1904. Comprising of: six shaped dessert plates and two different form of two-handled dishes. Each piece is hand-painted with a different shipping scene. Marked to the undersides. Plates: 22 cm wide. Sold to a local collector for £520 hammer.
A late eighteenth century Wedgwood two colour jasper Portland vase, c. 1780. It is decorated with classical scenes to each side and underneath. 27 cm tall. Bought by a prominent Wedgwood collector for £440 hammer.
