More than 100 artworks from 17 Derbyshire artists are going under the hammer this week in the first sale of its kind.
Etwall-based Hansons Auctioneers is teaming up with Peak District Artisans in the inaugural sale of members’ work as part of its larger art sale on March 4.
Owner Charles Hanson said: “When it comes to selling fine art at auction, we’re not only concerned with Old Masters or Victorian landscapes.
“We are delighted to be offering contemporary pieces in this week’s sale all by local home-grown talents from the Peak District Artisans. Each of them is a superbly talented individual showcasing the beauty of our fine county in the best possible way.”
Established in 1991, Peak District Artisans (PDA) brings together 60 of the region’s finest professional artists specialising in disciplines ranging from ceramics to textiles.
South Derbyshire based-ceramicist Philip Evans, who has been a member of the group for two years, said: “It’s a great opportunity for art lovers to purchase a piece of artwork at a very good price. For PDA members it allows us to sell work much quicker than relying on other outlets.”
Evans, who has been a ceramicist for 40 years, has 10 pieces in the sale with estimates ranging from £50-£150.
Other members taking part include the textile artist Alison Wake who creates landscapes in thread and yarn inspired by the scenery surrounding her Peak District home.
Two works by the Nigerian-born, Derby-based sculptor Ayodeji Kingsley both have estimates of £2,000-£2,500.
Kingsley, who has a master’s degree in environmental control from the University of Derby as well as a degree in chemical engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria, uses salvaged metals to create his sculptures.
His works have been shown in a variety of shows and galleries across the globe as well as public sculptures in Nigeria.
Another artist represented is Catriona Hall, who studied history of art and flora history, and has a style described as “tudor with a twist” or “modern medieval”.
Hall paints animals facing to the left, with many based on the wildlife surrounding her studio on the edge of the High Peak moors.
She also specialises in well-known houses, with a portrait of Chatsworth having a pre-sale guide price of £1,500-£3,000.
Meanwhile Swedish-born mixed media artist Ingrid Katarina Karlsson is inspired by the landscape surrounding her Peak District home. Her painting of a Dutch Barn near Minninglow in Derbyshire has a guide price of £150-£250.
Other artists taking part in the sale include Pam Smart, Elizabeth Forrest, Amadora Frogson, Katie Wyke, Mark Langley, Greta Vilidaité, Lottie Adams, Craig Longmuir, Diana Green, Tim Rose and Louise Edwards.
