Owl and shoe-inspiration – the quirky but oh so stylish Victorians

 |  By andy

The Victorians did things in style and our Spring Fine Art Auction has revealed some gems to demonstrate that.

A rare, late Victorian silver topped owl decanter takes the eye for its sleek lines and quirkiness. Victorians were renowned for celebrating nature in decorative objects. It’s heading to auction with an estimate of £1,000-£1,500.

Equally eye-catching is a collection of 19th Century Treen, shoe-shaped snuff boxes. A snuff box is a small, usually ornamental box for holding snuff, a scented, smokeless tobacco made from ground or pulverised tobacco leaves.

In the 18th century and beyond snuff become a product of choice for the wealthy elite. While poorer people smoked, smart dandies would elegantly take a pinch of snuff to gain their tobacco hit.

These antique snuff boxes not only remind us of a Victorian habit but also fashions of the day, capturing shoe and boot designs. The collection could fetch more than £1,000.

Entries are invited for our April 2-7 Fine Art and Library Auction until Thursday March 12. Fine paintings, wine, European and Asian art and ceramics, glass, works of art, vintage costume, decorative arts, clocks and furniture are welcome.
