One standout moment came with the sale of a match-worn England shirt from the 1966 World Cup, donned by none other than Sir Bobby Charlton. Emblazoned with the iconic Number 9, this historic jersey sold for a staggering £45,000, cementing its place as a symbol of England’s golden footballing era.
Another memorable sale featured a pair of David Beckham’s match-worn football boots, used during the 1998 World Cup. With provenance to match and the name of one of England’s most celebrated players attached, they achieved an impressive £14,500. Similarly, a match-worn yellow England goalkeeper shirt worn by Jimmy Rimmer during a 1976 match against Italy fetched £2,700, highlighting the continued demand for rare and well-documented memorabilia from all eras of the game.
Now, as we look ahead to our next Specialist Sporting Memorabilia Auction on Tuesday 20th May, Hansons is proud to present a truly unique and globally significant lot—an official Paris 2024 Olympic Torch.
This extraordinary piece was designed by Mathieu Lehanneur and manufactured by ArcelorMittal, one of the Games’ official suppliers. It is one of just 2,000 torches produced for the official 2024 Olympic Torch Relay, making it an incredibly rare and collectable item.
The torch itself reflects the three core themes of the Paris Games: Equality, Water and Peacefulness. Standing at approximately 70cm tall, its design is sleek and elegant, symbolising harmony and movement, with a mirrored finish that captures the spirit of both innovation and tradition.
The torch relay began in Olympia, Greece, on 16th April 2024, and concluded on 26th July with the spectacular opening ceremony held along the River Seine in Paris. The cauldron was lit in the Tuileries Garden, marking the start of the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad, which ran until 11th August 2024.
This particular torch comes in its original Paris 2024 presentation box and is accompanied by the official ‘Relais de la Flamme Paris 2024’ tracksuit, worn by the vendor during the relay. The vendor, who worked for one of the Worldwide Olympic Partners, contacted Hansons via our online valuation service. Following their enquiry, they attended an in-person appointment at our Etwall saleroom, where the item was assessed by valuer Edwyn Pym. The torch’s arrival through our front-of-house team is a testament to the ease and accessibility of our appraisal services—online or in person.
