A ‘monster’ 18th century Dutch clock – standing 8ft tall – is among antique timepieces of distinction in Hansons’ June 30 Fine Art Auction. Here antique clock consultant Mike Wetton picks out three collectors’ pieces set to tempt bidders.

Lot 379 | James McCabe excellence
Collectors will love this James McCabe London small bracket clock with single fusée chain-driven movement and anchor escapement. It has a 3″ square silvered dial with ‘Jas McCabe’ London engraved on it and Roman numerals with fine moon hands. It’s contained in a rosewood case raised on bun feet with glazed doors and lovely carved top with central finial. Both keys are present.
Mike Wetton says: “The McCabe is an absolute beauty and ready to go. One of his clocks achieved £10,000 in a previous. This is a fine example of renowned clockmaker James McCabe’s work.

Condition Good. Professionally restored by owner in 2021. Winding key and door keys not original.

Lot 381 | Impressive monster
If you want to own a real head-turner this Jan Gobels of Amsterdam 18th Century Dutch eight day longcase clock it most definitely it. It is 8ft tall and when fully restored will be very impressive, according to Mike.
It has an alarm, striking on two bells on the hours and half hours (Dutch striking). With two train five pillar movement brass cased weights, 12″ brass dial with moon-phase to the arch, four season spandrels, date calendar and subsidiary second. Dial edged with engraved pattern. Contained in a lovely veneered red walnut case raised on claw feet the bottom shaped typical of Dutch clocks long trunk door with lentil surrounded by a gilt cast brass ring depicting father time holding an hour glass surrounded by the sun, flowers and swags. The hood has applied columns with gilt bass caps Fine fretwork above the hood door and the sides.
Mike Wetton says: “The Dutch clock is a monster standing at eight foot tall. It is just fantastic. The clock originated from a vicarage in Birmingham and was passed down to the current owner through the family. It has been untouched for years. Luckily it has been out of the sun light so the deep red of the case is lovely. It strikes on two bells on the hours and half hours has an alarm, which is very unusual.”

Condition Original condition and all looks to belong, some minor loses of veneer and shrinkage spits due to age. Some of the hood fretwork is missing but a minor amount. Gilding fading on the casting. Movement not tested and will need professionally cleaning.
Note Jan Gobels is recorded as working in Amsterdam in 1767

Lot 378 | Black Forest Delight
This Black Forest hook and spike style verge wall clock is an attractive and affordable option bidders. It has a single train movement striking on a bell. Movement with x 4 baluster type pillars x 2 spikes at rear of movement. An unusual weight-driven verge escapement with pendulum bob at the front of the dial. Bell mounted horizontally on the top of the movement. Movement hooks onto a pine case which has an arch top originally painted with gilded flowers, now faded. A 5½” convex dial with Roman numerals and Arabic minutes. This is enamelled white and mounted on an arch metal shield with gilded swags and cross-hatching design (faded) – 8″ x 10″ to top of arch.
Dimensions: 20″ x 9″ x 3¼”.
Condition Untouched condition, movement not tested, case decorations faded, dial has some fine cracks but no chips, brass pulley and associated lead weight. Case hook is a modern replacement.
