The Mid 20th century interior design auction performed very well on Tuesday November 5th with a very busy saleroom and many people bidding on line. The star of the show was the superb 1927 Lalique Bacchantes vase with original bronze base that achieved £5200. In superb condition and with excellent provenance.
A collection of Daum glass also achieved good prices including a cameo glass vase with autumn style fruits and foliage that reached £800.
Arts and Crafts design were well represented with pewter by Archibald Knox and David Veasey and two excellent Liberty mirrors that both sold for over £400. A large hexagonal shaped charger by the renowned Keswick Industrial School of Arts performed well, as did their mid century designed silver coffee spoons.
British ceramics achieved excellent prices with examples by Moorcroft, Charlotte Rhead, Clarice Cliff and Susie Cooper all selling at good levels.
Although Doulton Lambeth wares aren’t performing particularly well at auction at present, two pairs of early 20th century Lambeth vases did very well. The first pair of stoneware vases, designed by Francis C Pope, circa 1905 and depicting mermaids achieved £580.
Margaret E Thomson designed the other pair of faience vases, circa 1900, again depicting mermaids and achieving a very strong £1300. Both pairs of vases were in excellent condition and were popular with dealers and collectors alike.
A stunning Art Nouveau Turn-Teplitz Amphora vase decorated with a crowned maiden with enamelled cabochon detail reached £850. The vase was in incredible condition and the detail to all parts of the vase was exquisite. A collection of Pugin tiles were very popular in the room and online and achieved £4,400.
The furniture highlight was a piece reflecting an iconic design of the 1960s, a white laminated space chair achieving £260.
Ceramics from the end of the 20th century were equally popular, highlights being a collection of chargers designed by Lorna Bailey, including examples depicting the Beatles and an excellent collection of Michael Sutty military bandsmen.
My personal favourite lot were the two late 19th century bronze medals awarded to Dame Laura Knight and her mother Charlotte Johnson. They achieved £1000, I was very proud to be selling them and dealing with a medal given to a lady who went on to become one of Britain’s most famous and respected artists, who paved the way for other female artists to gain recognition.
