She looks a tad startled but this early 20th century wax doll has no need to be because she has royal pedigree.
She depicts Queen Alexandra, wife of King-Emperor Edward VII and an important historical figure in the early part of the 20th century. In fact, she was so important she inspired this 18in doll with her wax painted face, filled body, original clothes and wooden legs.
Alexandra of Denmark (1844-1925) was Queen of the United Kingdom and the British Dominions, and Empress of India, from January 22, 1901 to May 6, 1910.
This depiction of her was treasured by a little girl more than a century ago. The vendor tells us it has been in their family since before the First World War and originally belonged to his grandmother-in-law.
It’s a lovely find and, thanks to the doll’s age and historical pedigree, enters Hansons Auctioneers’ March 12 Toy Auction guided at £150-£250 | lot 261
