Legends from world of antiques – Eric Knowles and Charles Hanson – to host Staffordshire valuation event

 |  By Kendal Cooper

A golden opportunity to meet two of Britain’s best-known antiques experts is coming up in Staffordshire this summer.

Eric Knowles, a familiar face on TV’s Bargain Hunt, Antiques Road Trip and Going For A Song, will host a special antique valuation event at Sparrow’s Tearoom, Bishton Hall, Wolseley Bridge, on Tuesday, 9th July from 10am- 4pm. Working alongside him will be fellow antiques expert and TV personality Charles Hanson – and no appointment is necessary.

Both have a vast knowledge of antiques and collectibles amassed over decades. They are happy to assess anything and everything. However, Eric specialises in ceramics and glassware while Charles offers expertise on Oriental ceramics and Fine Art objects.

Eric, a published author on Victoriana, Royal memorabilia, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and René Lalique, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He has lectured at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum, the British Museum and national museums in Australia, Canada, the USA, South Africa, France, Germany and the Czech Republic.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to visiting Staffordshire. I’ve been fortunate enough to discover some fascinating objects in the area over the years, and I’ve met some wonderful people.

“If you have a special object at home, perhaps something you have an inkling just might be important or valuable, do pop to see me.  If you like the guide price items can be consigned to auction on the day.”

Eric,  a consultant for Hansons Auctioneers’ Fine Art and Decorative Art departments, hopes to see items such as Moorcroft Pottery, Lalique glass, Dame Lucie Rie stoneware, Liberty, studio pottery, art glass, Art Nouveau, Troika, Clarice Cliff, sculpture, metalwork, Arts and Crafts, Modernist, Brutalist and contemporary wares.

Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers which operates its Staffordshire saleroom from Bishton Hall, said: “We can’t wait to team up for this event. Eric and I have known each other for many years. It’s always great fun to uncover new finds together.

“Eric is a legend in the world of antiques, a man with immense knowledge and wisdom. This is an opportunity to benefit from our joint expertise and, perhaps, pave the way to an auction windfall.”

Meet Eric Knowles and Charles Hanson on 9th July, 10am-4pm, at Sparrow’s Tearoom, Bishton Hall, Wolseley Bridge, Staffordshire, ST17 0XN.
