Colourful, eclectic and exotic collectables, gathered over 30 years by Burton man David Widdowson during his travels around the world, are coming up for auction in March.
The large array of objects includes everything from modern Chinese nephrite and jadeite carved ornaments, artwork and carved African and Asian animals to Murano glass, Buddhas and a 20th century Indian silver and enamel chess set featuring warrior pawns and figures riding elephants.
Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, said the entire collection acted as a wonderful tribute to the late Mr Widdowson.
Charles said: “It demonstrates his eclectic tastes and his generosity in supporting the artistic culture and heritage of every country he visited. Mr Widdowson came home time and again with unusual objects to remind him of his travel experiences. And every time he purchased a piece it supported the local economy and its craftsmen and women.
“I particularly love a magnificent Indian chess set which is both highly unusual and colourful. It has an estimate of £150-£250 and deserves to do well.
“We’re honoured to sell private collections such as this which are precious in so many ways. For example, this eclectic mix of objects help to tell the story of Mr Widdowson’s life. They were gathered with love and care by him over three decades and act as a reminder of a man who was loved dearly by his family.”
David’s son Chris Widdowson, 39, a key account manager in the gaming industry, said: “For almost 30 years dad loved to travel and worked around the world. He lived for months at a time in India, China, Tunisia, Italy and the US.
“He had a passion for visiting places of interest whilst on his travels. He bought interesting pieces from flea markets and curio shops to show his family on his return and these were eventually displayed in his home.
“He witnessed many ways of life, including some poverty-stricken areas, and always liked to support the local businesses and talented craftsman that he met along the way. He had a particular interest in Asian crafts and ornaments.
““Sadly, our father passed away unexpectedly in December at the age of 75, and whilst myself and my two sisters have chosen some of his favourite objects to keep in his memory, we do hope these other possessions can be enjoyed by others with similar interests.”
The David Widdowson collection will be sold during Hansons March 12-18 Antiques and Collectors Auction at Hansons, Heage Lane, Etwall, Derbyshire, DE65 6LS. The catalogue is due online by Saturday March 7 at www.hansonslive.co.uk. Auction lots can be previewed at the Etwall Auction Centre on Wednesday, March 11, 11am-7pm.
