Historic Finds and Record Bids: Hansons’ June Fine Art Auction a Resounding Success

 |  By Kirsty Myatt

Hansons Auctioneers enjoyed a landmark moment on Thursday 12th June as their Derby Fine Art, Silver, Jewellery & Watches Auction dazzled collectors and bidders from across the globe. With live bidding in the saleroom, over the phone and online, the sale produced exceptional results and raised significant funds for charity — most notably through a magnificent Regency partner’s desk that sparked international interest.

The undoubted star of the auction was Lot 298, a Regency pollard oak and ebony-inlaid partner’s desk attributed to celebrated cabinetmaker George Bullock (1762/3–1818). A museum-quality piece, it soared past its £15,000–£25,000 estimate to achieve a remarkable £38,000. Offered from a private collection, the proceeds of this historic piece were donated to The Connection at St Martin-in-the-Fields, a charity working to end rough sleeping in London.

Lot 298: A Regency pollard oak and ebony-inlaid partner’s desk attributed to George Bullock

Charles Hanson, Director of Hansons Auctioneers, said:

“Standing on the rostrum as bids flew in from all over the world for the George Bullock desk was a thrilling experience. The atmosphere was electric — a true testament to the craftsmanship of the piece and the story it told. To see it achieve £38,000 and benefit such a worthy cause was incredibly moving. It’s moments like this that remind us why we love what we do.”

Another remarkable highlight was Lot 63, a 19th-century enamelled gold mourning ring commissioned to honour Princess Amelia, the beloved youngest daughter of King George III. Rich with royal provenance and historical poignancy, it realised £5,500, far surpassing its £3,000–£4,000 estimate.

Lot 59: Ancient Greek Green Chalcedony Intaglio Ring

Adding to the day’s allure was Lot 59, a rare Ancient Greek green chalcedony intaglio ring depicting Neptune, dating from the 1st century BC and later mounted in a Georgian gold setting. Estimated at £500–£700, the ring sold for an impressive £5,600, highlighting the continued demand for classical antiquities.

Daniel Armstrong, Fine Art Auction Lead and Hansons’ expert silver valuer, commented:

“This sale was a perfect marriage of beauty, history and market energy. From ancient craftsmanship to royal remembrance, we were privileged to handle pieces that resonate deeply with collectors. Bidders were competing with purpose and passion — it was a joy to watch.”
