A Derbyshire man renowned for his antiques passion is set to share his knowledge with the people of Belper.
Karl Martin, valuer at Hansons Auctioneers and a legendary lover of all things Georgian, will offer free antique valuations at Strutts Centre Ltd, Derby Road, on August 22, 11am-1pm.
He said: “I can assess all types of antiques and collectibles but specialise in 18th and 19th century objects. My Derby home pays homage to the Georgian era which ran from 1714-1830. I am passionate about history, especially anything relating to my home county.
“Belper is famous for its heritage and I’m looking forward to making some fascinating finds there. It will be the first of regular monthly valuation and consignment events at Strutts. It’s an opportunity to dig out any curios you think may be valuable. If you like the estimate, you can consign them into auction with Hansons.”
Karl’s 1934 two-bed semi in Derby brims with jaw-dropping period elegance and film-set star quality thanks to hundreds of antiques and collectibles he’s gathered over decades. He uses 19th century cutlery, eats his dinner off a Georgian plate and there are echoes of Charles Dickens too.
Karl said: “My Georgian four-poster bed is the same as one used in the 1984 film A Christmas Carol starring George C Scott. The only new thing I have in the house is a TV to watch Derby County. I hope people will come to see me so we can share a mutual passion for antiques and, perhaps, find a new home for any unwanted items courtesy of Hansons.”
Karl Martin will be at Strutts Centre Ltd, Derby Road Belper, Derbyshire, DE65 1UU, on August 22, September 19, October 24 and November 21, 11am-1pm.
