More than 900 pencils collected over decades by a former headmistress are set for auction.
The pencils, in every colour and lead grade imaginable, are coming up for sale with Hansons Auctioneers. Some have quirky toppers depicting dragons, historical figures and a sailing ship among other things.
Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, said: “Collections come in every shape and form imaginable and I suppose we shouldn’t be too surprised a former teacher liked to collect pencils. They are, after all, an essential learning tool for every pupil she ever taught.
“It’s a quirky and colourful celebration of school life that made me smile. Hansons has earned quite a reputation for selling unusual collections. Recently we sold around 200 soaps, gathered mainly from hotels over 50 years.
“Collecting is a passion for many people. We see everything from coins and ceramics to key rings and cigarette cards. The thrill of adding to a collection brings people great joy.
“Sadly, the headmistress who amassed the pencils is no longer with us. It’s nice to think we can help to find a new home for something that was so special to her.”
The pencils, estimate £30-£50, will be offered in the June 29 sale at Bishton Hall, Staffordshire.
