Hansons Staffordshire appointed to handle important corporate art collection

 |  By andy

By ADRIAN RATHBONE

Hansons Auctioneers’ Staffordshire branch at Bishton Hall is delighted to have been appointed to handle the sale of an important corporate collection of modern art.

Adrian Rathbone, Hansons’ Associate Director and Head of Fine Art whose enthusiasm and professionalism helped win the consignment, is delighted to be handling the sale.

The company, which wishes to remain anonymous, built up the collection to decorate various offices over a number of years. All of the works are post-war and comprise limited-edition prints and originals by names such as Michael Brennand-Wood, (a renowned visual artist and innovative working in textiles), James Cox, Roy Fairchild Woodard, John Hoyland R.A., James Hussey, Albert Irvin O.B.E. R.A., Myfanwy Johns and Kristian Krokfors to name a few.

Arguably, the most famous works on offer are a number of rare and colourful limited-edition signed prints by Sir Terry Frost R.A. (British, 1915). Sir Terry, who was born in Leamington Spa, is a well-known name who worked in Newlyn, Cornwall. He became a leading exponent of abstract art and is a major figure cemented in the British art establishment. He died aged 87 in Cornwall in 2003.

In the collection coming up, there are nine limited-edition signed works by Frost. All are typical of his abstract use of form and colour and most are in very low editions of just 40. There are two, one titled ‘It is True’ and ‘The Moon Rising’ in editions of just five making these exceptionally rare and desirable. Estimates for the Frost works range from £700 up to £3,000. Estimates for the other pieces in the collection range from £100 to £1,000.

Adrian said: “I have handled a number of corporate and institutional private artwork collections over the years. The current market is very buoyant for notable 20th Century artists such as Terry Frost. In the current world situation, collectors and investors are looking to put their money into tangible assets such as art rather than into risk prone stocks, shares and ISA’s. I therefore expect there to be a lot of worldwide pre-sale interest in the collection when it comes up for public auction in October.”

The collection will be offered in Hansons’ Decorative Arts & Design auction at Bishton Hall, Staffordshire on October 9. For more information, please contact Adrian Rathbone on 01889 882397 or email [email protected].
