Gold rush! Chunky gold jewellery dominates top lots as demand increases

 |  By Kendal Cooper

In unsettled economic times gold has always provided solace for investors and auction results show demand for this important precious metal is strengthening.

Heavyweight gold jewellery such as chunky charm bracelets or necklaces or bracelets set with gold sovereigns are in particularly strong demand.

Hansons’ July 2024 auction at the firm’s Staffordshire saleroom, Bishton Hall, saw gold jewellery dominate the five top-selling lots.

Golden Top Five

Lot 58 | 18ct yellow gold-plaited chunky bracelet. Total gross weight approx. 69.6 grams. Condition: A couple of loose pins/bars | Hammer £2,300

Lot 107 | Six full sovereigns mounted in bracelet. Coins dated 1968, 1968, 1968, 1968, 1968 and 1966. Total gross weight approx. 70.5 gram | Hammer £2,280

Lot 106 | 9ct yellow gold charm bracelet with safety chain and heart padlock. Charms included Onyx Dragon Watch Fob Seal, Gold Ingot, Horse, Elephant and Articulated Mermaid. Total gross weight approx. 127 grams | Hammer £2,100.00

Lot 102 | Five Full sovereigns mounted in 9ct gold bracelet with heart padlock. Sovereigns dated 1896, 1897, 1899, 1901, 1901. Total gross weight approx. 65.6 grams. | Hammer £2,050

Lot 103 | 18ct gold chunky bracelet with fringe design and inset melee rubies. Total gross weight approx. 58.6 grams. Hammer £1,950

Hansons says: “Gold prices have reached new highs in 2024 and there is no expectation of a change of momentum, quite the opposite in fact. A wide range of factors dictate the price of gold including geopolitical risks, the interest rate outlook, inflation hedging and central bank buying.

“If you have any unwanted gold at home, even broken gold jewellery, it will likely do well at auction because our sales reach a global marketplace of bidders and investors.”
