Georgian treasures at home? Join a celebration of antiques history in summer auction

 |  By Kendal Cooper

Derbyshire has much to be proud of when it comes to Georgian splendour and the hunt is on to find antiques to celebrate this important period in British history.

The Georgian era, which spanned 1714 to circa 1830, was a prosperous time of immense social change. It saw the start of the Industrial Revolution and movement to cities. Meanwhile the arts flourished led by writers and poets such as Daniel Defoe, Henry Fielding, Jane Austen, William Wordsworth, John Keats and Robert Burns.

Distinctive Georgian architecture emerged and Derby boasts some fine examples including Pickford’s House Museum of Georgian Life and Costume, a Grade I listed building.

Georgian antiques are in demand as people like to capture the atmosphere and style of the period. Last year the entire contents of a circa 1770 Georgian townhouse in Friar Gate saw lots achieve up to 10 times their estimates. Some 230 bidders battled to own 268 antiques, many of the period, sourced by Derbyshire collector Gail Brotherton.

Derby Georgian era expert and antiques valuer Karl Martin is sourcing objects for a Summer Georgian Auction on July 30 at Georgian mansion Bishton Hall. Entries invited until July 9.

Karl is hosting a free valuation event on March 28, noon-3pm, at Hansons’ Derbyshire saleroom.

If you have Georgian silver, paintings, longcase clocks, furniture or any type of antique, he would be delighted to hear from you.
