A colourful collection of boxes capturing Russian folk art at its best are set for auction.
The rustic collectables come in all shapes and sizes and depict scenes and people from the Mother Land.
People in traditional dress are seen in fields, gardens, woods and cities going about their daily business, be it picking fruit in a forest or trudging through snow, stick in hand to help them.
Homes and countryside are captured in simple, bold colours providing a flavour of the history and heritage of Russia.
Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers, said: “Russian lacquer boxes are a traditional Russian folk-art form dating from the late 1700s. They are beautiful in their simplicity and designs are inspired by the landscape and fairytales.
“I come across them occasionally but have never seen such a large and varied collection. They are fascinating to peruse. They capture the architecture, landscape and people of a country that seems mysterious to many of us.
“These boxes are among the most beautiful crafts of Russia and I would expect strong interest, perhaps from buyers keen to repatriate them to their homeland.”
