From Russia with Horns: Silver-Mounted Drinking Horns with a Secret Past Set for Auction

 |  By Kendal Cooper

A pair of rare 20th-century Russian silver-mounted drinking horns, steeped in mystery and history, are set to be featured in the upcoming February Antiques & Collectors Auction at Hansons Auctioneers in Derbyshire. The horns were brought to a recent valuation day in Ashbourne, where they caught the eye of valuer Notty Hornblower.

The vendor, who is the sister-in-law of the original owner, believes her late brother-in-law worked in Russia during the 1960s and 70s, possibly for the Ministry of Defence (MOD), in a role shrouded in secrecy, much like the intrigue of a Cold War spy novel. He spent many years in Russia during a time when international relations were complex and often clandestine. The horns were passed down from him to his wife, the vendor’s late sister, and now they are being offered to the public at auction.

The Russian silver-mounted drinking horns are both beautiful and historically significant. One horn, approximately 21cm long, features niello inlay with a design of intricate foliage, topped with a bird or animal motif at the end. The second horn, measuring about 21.5cm in length, is engraved with a floral and foliate design, complete with a bird head at the base, showcasing the fine craftsmanship that Russian silversmiths are known for.

Historically, Russian silver-mounted drinking horns were used for ceremonial purposes, often as a symbol of wealth and status. Made from natural materials such as horn and mounted in silver, these items were common at royal banquets and celebratory toasts. Their ornate designs reflected Russia’s noble heritage and artistry, making them prized possessions passed down through generations.

The pair of horns will be featured as Lot 21 in the Silver section of the 13th – 18th February Four-Day Antiques & Collectors Auction at Hansons Auctioneers, with an estimated value of £80 – £120.

“This is an extraordinary lot with a fascinating backstory,” said Notty Hornblower, Valuer at Hansons Auctioneers. “The history behind these items is just as captivating as their design. With their possible Cold War connection, these drinking horns are not only beautiful examples of Russian silverwork but also have a sense of intrigue and mystery that’s rare to find.”

The horns, along with other exciting items, will be available to view in the auction catalogue, which is available online. The auction will take place at Hansons Auctioneers in Derbyshire, and interested buyers can bid either in person or online.
