Football crazy! Marcus Rashford England shirt and Maradona trophy set for auction kick-off

 |  By Kendal Cooper

Fine football finds are set to go under the hammer as Hansons prepares to celebrate the August kick-off with a Sports Auction.

Among lots consigned is a Marcus Rashford England shirt. He wore it for an England v Belgium UEFA Nations League Group A2 group stage fixture. The match, played at Wembley on October 11, 2020, was behind closed doors due to Covid.

The good news is England won 2-1 and Rashford scored a penalty to level the score to 1-1. The game was Rashford’s 39th England cap and the penalty was his 11th England goal. The Nike Vaporknit shirt has Rashford’s legacy number ‘1215’ on the collar, £1,000-£1,500.

Bidders can also battle for a trophy presented to Diego Maradona. The Golden Ball for the Best Player in Europe trophy is inscribed, ‘A Diego Armando Maradona Capitano Dello Scudetto Y Migliore Giocatore di Calcio Dell Europa 1986/87 La Revista France Football’ (To Diego Armando Maradona Captain of Napoli Champion Squad and Best Player of European Football 1986/7 La Revista France Football), £600-£800.

Other football lots include a hallmarked silver cigarette box presented to Billy Wright, the lid bearing inscription: Presented by The Anglo-American Sporting Club to Billy Wright CBE, Former Captain of England and Wolverhampton Wanderers for his contribution to Soccer, Hotel Piccadilly Manchester, Tuesday 20th August 1968.

The items were originally part of the Billy Wright Collection, and then sold at Sotheby’s Football Memorabilia Auction, 17th May 2002, Lot 162, £600-£800.

The Sports Auction will also include The Roland James Burgess Archive, a collection of medallions, black and white press photographs and plaques relating to former football official and South Oxfordshire Special Constable Roland James Burgess, £500-£800.

Contents include a 9ct gold medallion awarded to Burgess by The Football Association for being a linesman at the 1951 FA Cup Final between Newcastle United and Blackpool on April 28, 1951; a 9ct gold medallion from the 1950 Channel Islands Football Championship where Burgess officiated, and three silver medallions awarded by The Football Association.

The collection also includes a long service medal For Faithful Service in the Special Constabulary with two bars ‘Long Service 1957’ and ‘Long Service 1967’; a 1939-1945 Defence Medal; a small Adidas boot with a collection of autographs on it; a photo of Burgess with other Special Constables and a collection of black and white press photographs of match action including Burgess as both a referee and linesman in the late 1940s and early 50s.

Provenance: The vendor is the daughter-in-law of Roland James Burgess, who passed away in 1977. The items have been kept in a cupboard and never displayed. A family member recounted that the family never used to have a Christmas Day meal as Roland was always officiating on Boxing Day.

Entries are invited until July 26 for Hansons’ August 16 Football & Sports Auction. To book a free valuation, email David Wilson-Turner: [email protected] or call 01283 733988.
