Treasures unearthed in London and the south are coming up for sale in what Hansons London describes as one of its best auctions yet.
Hundreds of items will go under the hammer on Saturday, October 27, from 11am, Here, Hansons London owner Charles Hanson picks out five star lots.
Burst of floral beauty
This floral chrysanthemum painting is by Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, man regarded as one of the 20th centuries greatest artists. It was given as a gift to fellow artist and friend Elsa Fraenkel, a sculptor, in 1920s Paris. It’s a rare and unique find, hence the estimate of £70,00-£100,000.
Collages by Schwitters
Two more very important pieces of artwork up for auction are collages by German artist Kurt Schwitters. They also belonged to Elsa Fraenkel and one is inscribed ‘Für Frau Frankel’ (for Mrs Fraenkel), dated 1927. They carry estimates of £10,000-£20,000 and £40,000-£60,000 respectively.
Ravishing Russian design
This wonderful aquamarine and diamond pendant necklace shimmers with a multitude of precious stones encased in gold and is believed to be Faberge. It’s striking design and fine workmanship is likely to make it extremely sought after. Estimate £10,000-£15,000.
Fiji and Tahiti more than a century ago
Some 81 fascinating images of Fiji and Tahiti, preserved for posterity in a photograph album dating back to 1902, focus on the sights, customs and culture of the South Pacific islands. Everything from spear fishing to Fijian warriors are shown. Estimate £1,200-£1,800.
Traditional way to drink …
A kovsh is a traditional drinking vessel or ladle from Russia and we have a fine example in silver and enamel in our October sale. Oval-shaped like a boat and with a single handle, it is beautiful as well as elegant. Originally a Kovsh was made from wood and used to serve and drink mead. Specimens have been excavated from as early as the 10th century. Estimate £1,000-£2,000.
