Fashionista’s 1,000-stong collection of bags and designer shoes set for auction

 |  By Kendal Cooper

An iconic collection of more than 1,000 handbags and shoes –  amassed by a fashionista over decades – are set for auction.

The vastness of the colourful, quirky and pristine collection has stunned Notty Hornblower, period clothing, fashion and textiles consultant at Hansons Auctioneers.

She said: “The Oxfordshire collector, who sadly is no longer with us, had a passion for unusual shoes and bags and gathered them over many years. Like many shoe fans, she loved Irregular Choice, a British brand started by designer Dan Sullivan in 1999 to help people stand out from the crowd.

“Their footwear is highly embellished with quirky design features. For example a pair of Disney lace-up trainers set for auction have a see-through Perspex wedge heel displaying Cinderella inside. She is automated and swirls round inside the heel when wound up.”

Other Irregular Choice shoes include Love Me Not Glitter, Dazzles, 2nd Razzle, Trizy and IC Fringe Floral. There are also two pairs of candy pink sequinned shoes designed Dan Sullivan and  a pair of Lady Dragon T-bar shoes designed by Vivienne Westwood.

If you want a bag to match the shoes, the choice is vast too. Notty said:  “There is a multitude of bags any Barbie  girl would love to own including late 1950s American handbags made out of Perspex. They come in square and oblong shapes.

“There is also a wonderful mixture of special occasion bags in soft shades such as pink and cream, some embellished with sequins or crystal. If you have a wedding or special event coming up you will be spoilt for choice.

“Everything has been cherished and cared for. The shoes come in their original boxes and many appear to be unworn. When it comes to shoe size the magic number is  5 (38). All the shoes are size 5. You will feel like Cinderella if that size fits you.”

The items will be offered across three months starting with Hansons’ August 17-22 Antiques and Collectors Auction.
