Extraordinary journey of Karuizawa whisky from Japan, via Paris, to our saleroom

 |  By Kendal Cooper

By Stuart Palmer, Head of Wine, Whisky & Spirits at Hansons Auctioneers

In the world of fine spirits, there are tales that transcend the ordinary, stories that evoke the spirit of adventure and discovery. Such is the narrative behind an exceptional bottle of Japanese whisky that has made its way into the September 26 Wine, Whisky & Spirits sale at Hansons Auctioneers.

Imagine the charming tale of our vendor, a regular person much like any of us. The story begins with a heartfelt gift from his father who had once worked amidst the vibrant streets of Paris. As a souvenir of his time in the city of culture and cuisine, he brought back an unassuming bottle of Karuizawa whisky.

This precious find, an extremely rare Karuizawa 1979, 35 Year Old Single Cask #8187, has been tucked away in a box on top of a wardrobe for the last nine years, its true value hidden from sight. It is set for auction (lot 173) with a guide price of £10,000-£12,000.

Karuizawa, once a hidden treasure nestled in the Japanese mountains, has become legendary in the world of whisky. The distillery, now closed, has left behind a legacy of exceptional single malts that have become the stuff of dreams for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

Founded in 1955, this distillery gained renown for its unique production methods and the exceptional quality of its spirits. This 1979 vintage is a testament to Karuizawa’s dedication to craft. Aged for 35 years in an ex-Bourbon single cask, it embodies the essence of time and patience. Bottled in July 2014 at a cask strength of 58.8% Vol, it’s a symphony of flavours and aromas are waiting to be savoured.

What makes this particular bottle extra special is its exclusive connection to the world renowned La Maison du Whisky in France. Exclusive to LMDW, only 350 bottles were ever released, making it a rare and coveted treasure in the world of Japanese whisky.

Don’t miss the September 26 Wine, Whisky & Spirits sale, where the world of spirits comes alive, and where every bottle tells a story. Whether you’re a seasoned collector or a curious novice, there’s a place for you in our community of connoisseurs. Who knows what extraordinary spirits await your discovery?

As we prepare to auction this exceptional bottle, we invite you to embark on your own whisky journey. Explore your collection, delve into your cellars, and uncover the hidden treasures that may be waiting to find a new home. Just as our vendor’s discovery has brought excitement and anticipation to our auction, your own unique finds could become the next stars of our sales.
