Hansons Auctioneers are fast becoming the go-to auction house to both buy and sell high-quality transfer-printed British ceramics. Their latest offering, curated by Dr Richard Halliday, Head of Ceramics, was a huge success with brisk bidding recorded from every corner of the world.
The sale was of a collection assembled in a highly-discerning manner over many decades from the 1960s onwards which covered every aspect of Spode’s transfer-printed wares from 1784-1833. The two main highlights were the comprehensive Caramanian and Indian Sporting pieces. Almost every pattern in each series was represented. Furthermore, uncommon shapes such as knife rests, drainers, tureens, asparagus servers, razor boxes and more were a noticeable and welcomed addition.
This sale proves that with excellent cataloguing, photography and promotion, that blue and white transfer-printed ceramics are still popular and relevant in the current market and in these strange times we are living in. The record prices achieved are testament to this fact.
