Everything from sought-after antiques and artwork to a kitchen table, ride-on lawnmower, one-armed bandit and Elvis Presley records could be yours when the entire contents of a Derbyshire country house go under the hammer.
Hundreds of antiques and vintage collectables from The Old Hall in the South Derbyshire village of Burnaston will be sold by Hansons Auctioneers on Wednesday, January 6 in what is described as an ‘old-fashioned, everything-must-go sale with no reserves’.
All prices start at just £5 on items which include ‘good antiques’ such as a George III elm dresser, circa 1780; George III late 18th century oak and mahogany longcase clock by Wainwright of Nottingham, circa 1790, and George III joined oak settle, circa 1770.
Paintings, prints, books, cutlery, a sewing machine, pine kitchen table and chairs, bedroom furniture and even the contents of the garden shed are also set to go under the hammer.
Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons, said: “This is a good, old-fashioned country house sale with no reserve prices set. It offers an opportunity to buy a piece of old England, something the Americans and Canadians in particular love to do. It’s unusual because bidding starts at £5 on every item, and there are some good antiques to be had. It’s all got to go.”
The Old Hall, a £1 million period property, was originally a half-timbered 17th Century manor house. It was rebuilt in the Victorian era to create a three-gabled front elevation. It stands resplendent in ample gardens awash with old-world charm.
Mr Hanson said: “This period home has provided a perfect setting for antiques, paintings and ceramics. Elegant decorative touches and artwork have been carefully amassed and cared for.
“We were not expecting the timing of this online-only sale to coincide with the start of another lockdown. I hope it will offer a welcome diversion. In a bid to do something positive, many people have improved their homes and gardens in recent months. This sale offers plenty of décor inspiration.”
The Old Hall auction catalogue can be viewed online at www.hansonslive.co.uk and bidding is already under way. Mr Hanson said: “There is lots to choose from. When it comes to the antiques, I have too many favourites to mention but I particularly like a George III joined oak settle and George III late 18th century oak mule chest, circa 1790.
Other items include lot 14, a George III elm dresser, circa 1780; lot 16, a Chinese elm shoe shiner’s stool with a money slot and lot 23, a Victorian mahogany library bookcase, circa 1860. Other interesting pieces include lot 34, an early 20th Century Dutch leather suitcase plus similar suitcases and lot 100, a set of copper jugs.
Ceramics include Oriental, Royal Crown Derby, Denby and Churchill wares while lot 75 brings together a mix of blue and white ceramics.
Artwork featuring everything from Oriental to classical scenes such as lot 119, an oil on canvas featuring a man and a cart in a winter landscape. At the opposite end of the weather, and painting, spectrum lot 151, is a set of three oil paintings in French Impressionist style, one showing children playing on a beach in summer.
A variety of Chinese items include ginger jars turned into lamps, bowls, Chinese panels, embroidery and lot 130, a Chinese bronze Shang Dynasty temple figure.
