Madonna’s autographed satin glove and John Lennon’s shirt were among an eclectic mix of hundreds of antiques and collectables from a Dubai collector which made more than £25,000 at auction.
Star lot was a grey denim John Lennon shirt which made £4,000. It was gifted to a fan, Kerry Collingwood, in Brisbane during the Beatles tour of Australia in 1964. The rare piece of music memorabilia was snapped up by a private overseas buyer.
But it was just one of several lots that did well when the Dubai Collection went under the hammer in Hansons Auctioneers’ recent Antiques and Collectable sale.
Charles Hanson, owner of the auction house based at Etwall, near Derby said: “We billed this as the sale which brought treasures from Dubai to Derby and, for a while at least, the Midlands city became the Dubai of the art world.”
Several statures were part of the sale and Lot 3250, a decorative bronze statue of a woman drinking, soared to £1,900.
There were also several prints and paintings, the latter sparking two major bidding battles. Lot 3016, a signed Thomas Davidson Battle of Trafalgar oil on canvas reached £2,400, and Lot 3196, a 17th century portrait of a cavalier, sold for £2,200 from an £800 estimate.
The hugely eclectic collection included several items linked to modern celebrities and a Ronnie Wood, signed, limited edition print fetched £440.
Meanwhile, Madonna’s aforementioned autographed satin glove, mounted and framed with a backstage pass for the Drowned World Tour 2001, achieved a more modest £70.
Mr Hanson said: “This was an important collection which we were delighted to market from Derby to the world. We were equally delighted to see the items sell for in excess of £25,000.
“It’s no surprise that John Lennon’s shirt soared to £4,000. After all, this English singer and songwriter co-founded the Beatles, the most commercially successful band in the history of pop music.
“Other items such as the paintings and statues also caught many bidders’ eyes, as did some fine pieces of furniture. For example, a Louis XV-style writing desk sold for £350.
“It was a rare opportunity for people to buy classic antiques as well as more quirky or unusual items, not often seen in a saleroom. They grasped that opportunity.
The Dubai Collection was sold in Hansons Auctioneers’ Antiques and Collectors Auction, February 15-17 and 19-20.
