Vintage brooches can create costly confusion – because some people mistakenly think they’re costume jewellery.

Such is its charm it’s been consigned to our Summer Fine Art Jewellery Auction with an estimate of £450-£550.
Jewellery expert David Byrne, who came across this gem at his regular Tuesday valuation day at our Etwall HQ, said: “I often see vintage brooches like this. One lady said, ‘I’m just showing you this before I take it to the charity shop’. She was convinced it was costume jewellery. The client who brought this latest brooch into Hansons knew it was gold but was still surprised by the valuation.
“Brooches are back is a term you may have heard and jewellery like this from the 1960s and 70s is growing in popularity with collectors.”
