 |  By Kendal Cooper

By Stuart Palmer, Head of Wine, Whisky & Spirits at Hansons Auctioneers

When it comes to rare and exceptional Scotch whisky, few Independent bottler names carry as much prestige as the Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS).

Renowned for its exclusive single cask releases, the society has captured the hearts of whisky aficionados around the world. And now, you have the unique opportunity to explore and acquire a curated selection of 24 SMWS treasures at Hansons Auctioneers’ Wine, Whisky & Spirits Auction on September 26, 2023.

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society: A Journey Beyond Ordinary

For those unfamiliar with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, it’s an organisation unlike any other in the whisky world. Founded in 1983, the society’s mission has always been to celebrate the art of whisky-making by offering a rare glimpse into the extraordinary. Their exclusive single cask releases represent not just bottles of whisky but stories of craftsmanship, innovation, and the undeniable spirit of Scotland.

At the heart of SMWS lies a commitment to showcasing the diversity and complexity of Scotland’s finest distilleries. Each bottle is a testament to the unique character of the whisky, distilled from carefully selected casks that exemplify the artistry and dedication of the master distillers.

As we prepare for our September 26 auction, we invite you to explore the catalogue, where you’ll find detailed descriptions and images of each SMWS bottle, including the Highland Park 1988, 19 Year Old – SMWS 4.127, the Bowmore 1988, 17 Year Old – SMWS 3.124, and the Laphroaig 1991, 20 Year Old – SMWS 29.121. These bottles not only represent exceptional craftsmanship but also a piece of whisky history waiting to be savoured.
