The trend for Victorian jewellery – notably archaeological revival pieces – shone through at Hanson Auctioneers’ recent sale.
An Etruscan-style necklace and bracelet, both decorated with lapis lazuli and pearls and consigned by an owner in Warwickshire, were among the top sellers.
The pendent sailed past its estimate of £1,800-£2,000 to hammer at £3,000, with the bracelet selling for a mid-estimate £900.
Hanson Auctioneers’ associate director and jewellery, Helen Smith, said: “These were exquisite pieces both decorated with alternate lapis lazuli and half pearls.
“Jewellery like this reflects the Victorian obsession with the archaeological discoveries taking place at the time at Pompeii and Herculaneum.
“Jewellers of the mid to late 19th century recreated the splendour of classical antiquity for fashionable society, producing jewels rich in symbolism, colour and historical romance.”
Such pieces echo of the celebrated “Grand Tour”, when affluent British travellers journeyed through Rome, Florence and Venice collecting works of art and jewellery inspired by the ancient civilisations they encountered.
At the same sale another Victorian gold bangle, also inspired by the ancient world, doubled its pre-sale estimate when it sold for £1,200 against a guide price of £600.
Helen Smith continued: “At the centre sat an oval ivory-toned panel delicately decorated with a floral motif.
“Jewellery inspired by archaeological and classical themes has become increasingly sought after in recent years, with collectors appreciating both the artistry and historical resonance of such pieces.”
Another sign of the enduring popularity of Victorian jewellery came in the elegant shape of a sapphire and diamond bangle, which sold for its high estimate of £1,200.
Helen continued: “Antique bangles and bracelets from the period have become increasingly popular as buyers look for jewellery that combines craftsmanship, history and contemporary elegance.
“Younger buyers especially are gravitating toward pieces that look curated rather than bought yesterday. Both celebrity influencers and fashion stylists are helping to shine a light on Victorian and Georgian jewellery.”
