Sky-high auction prices were achieved at Holloway’s debut sale under new management – and the success of clocks signalled the time was right for a fresh start.
The Oxfordshire saleroom in Parsons Street, Banbury, held its first auction since lockdown on September 12 following its acquisition by Hansons Auctioneers – and results were impressive with estimates smashed.
More than 90% of lots sold and strong prices were achieved across all sectors including jewellery and clocks, the latter dominating the top 10 lots.
Charles Hanson, owner of Hansons Auctioneers which has acquired Holloway’s, now Hanson Holloway’s Ross , said: “It was an excellent sale with more than 90% of lots sold. We saw particularly strong bidding for clocks and some sensational prices achieved. This new chapter in Holloway’s history appears to be timed to perfection and I’m delighted for all concerned.
“We now have a strong team sourcing Fine Art items across Oxfordshire and neighbouring counties for the next Banbury auctions on October 3 and November 7. Sales will be held on the first Saturday of the month.”
Highlights of the auction included lot 319, a Jasper Tayler (Taylor) late 17th/early 18th century style, 30-hour, travelling alarm time piece with fitted travel case which sold for £6,500 from an estimate of £500-£700.
Another clock to impress, lot 329, was a large 17th century 30-hour brass lantern clock with high dome and bell and verge and wheel escapement. It was contested to £6,000, around six times its £800-£1,200 guide price.
Lot 330 also achieved a hammer price of £6,000, a quirky Victorian Camerer Kuss and Co of London automaton timepiece with a medieval page seated atop a cask. When the hour is reached, he pours and takes a drink. It sold for 20 times its £300 estimate.
The gavel fell at £5,000 for lot 313, a 17th century style, 30-hour miniature lantern timepiece bearing the name D Quair, London. Meanwhile lot 334, an early 18th century, walnut-cased eight- day bracket clock bearing the name Isaac Loundes made £4,300.
The clock success continued with lot 314, a Manoah Rhodes and sons Ltd, Bradford, eight-day carriage clock featuring painted porcelain panels and beaded gilt brass case with folding Greek key handle. It reached £3,000 from a guide price of £800-£1,000.
