Steiff teddy bears and rare dolls from around the world – including a scarce Italian gem – are among lots set to inspire childhood nostalgia in the December 6 Bishton Dolls, Teddies, Fashion and Textiles Auction.
This specialist sale offers a hugely varied selection of toys to delight collectors across the globe. Here, Hansons’ dolls and teddy bear expert Janet Rawnsley shares some of her favourite lots.
German rarity

Lot 236 | This German Grodnertal 1830 wooden painted doll, above, would have been used in a large cabinet doll house representing the lady of the house. It features an interesting carved hair comb. £250-350
Asian beauty

Lot 208 | German Armand Marseille Chinese rare “Ellar” mold bisque Asian baby face doll. £80-100
Teddies galore

Lot 334 | Early 20th century, WW1 era Teddy bear, Likely J K Farnell. Originally Lavender in shade and now faded. The lavender is seen in all creases and joints and inner ear etc. £300-400. Despite being faded he is a very rare chap and is good friends with Lot 351, this lovely Steiff ash mohair teddy bear, below. £500-700

We also have long a large collection of pristine Steiff collectible teddy bears, £60-£300 each, boxed. Chiltern teddy bears and waving Rosy poise teddy bears in some of the rarer colours are also included in the sale.

Lot 377 | Teddy bear lovers will also be tempted by a Steiff teddy made to honour legendary fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld. The KL teddy was launched with his distinctive shades, high collar and diamond KL belt. He is a handsome teddy and highly prized. £400-600
Dolls to delight

Lots 228, 233, 233 | Glorious Door of Hope Carved wooden dolls made in Shang Hai, China, in 1905. We are offering several starting at £100-150 each, all in original costumes.
Italian charm

Lot 225 | A taste of Italy comes to the fore thanks to this good example of a Lenci doll made in Turin, Italy, in the late 1920s. Felt-dressed flower gatherer with her market basket. £80-100
Rome rarity

Lot 200 | We are thrilled to offer this scarce Gaspere Burgarella wooden doll, made in Rome in 1930. She wears her original floral garden felt outfit. Impossibly rare opportunity for collectors to buy a seldom seen doll. £1500-2000
Modern girls
Barbie has a cousin called Francie and we have lots of Francie offerings in the sale including her African American version Pal, made for a few months only), plus some rare piece £250+.
Bidders will also find Sindy and Friends plus outfits and collectible accessories £80-£300.
Toys for the boys
The sale includes old toy shop stock of vintage Airfix kits. Lots of unused kits ready to open and re live your childhood.
Meanwhile, James Bond is out in force in the guise of boxed Action Man offerings. Perfect vintage shop stock from the 1990s.
We also have a very fine collection of 1930s Hornby O gauge train and buildings from a childhood collection and a wonderful rare loco and engine sheds and accessories in original boxes.
Steiff rocking horse

Lot 388 | Steiff features again with a beautiful Harrods bow rocker rocking horse called Francie. It is the most beautiful Christmas gift for a child. £120-£150
Lot 422 | A huge Tudor scratch built dolls house is a Christmas collectible too and a wonderful toy starting at just £40-60.

Bidders will also be enticed by a Silver Cross dolls pram, which appears to be unused, and a great steel baby carriage made in Yorkshire.

Modern touch

The toy auction also offer plenty of vintage and unboxed Star Wars toys and figures. Lots cov er a price spectrum from £100-£400.
