Derbyshire’s rich ceramics heritage comes to the fore in our monthly sales and one woman determined to make its importance shine even brighter is Gillian Finney.
Her broad knowledge of ceramics, amassed over decades, extends from 18th and 19th century pottery to Beswick, Moorcroft, Crown Derby, Royal Doulton, Spode and Royal Worcester – and she’s happy to share it with you.
From June 28, Gillian will at Hansons’ Derbyshire saleroom in Etwall every Tuesday, from 10am-2pm, to offer free ceramic valuations.

Over the years she has specialised in 18th and 19th century porcelain, gaining knowledge of many factories responsible for amazing pieces seen at auction. Along the way, she’ s developed a comprehensive knowledge of all types of pottery.
Away from Hansons, she works alongside husband, Alan, a leading restorer of high-quality ceramics. Their Staffordshire-based company Ceramic Restoration Studios Ltd, founded in 1979, received a Royal Warrant from The Prince of Wales in 2018.

Gillian said: “In the world of ceramics we never stop learning. There is always something exciting popping up from private collections, boxes in an attic, a cellar or garage. So often, ceramics are hidden away for many years.
“It’s a privilege to join Charles Hanson, the owner of Hansons, and the wonderful team at Etwall Auction Centre. I will be advising clients who wish to consign all types of ceramics to auction. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if I can assist in any way.”
