Antique and vintage buttons of all shapes and sizes – plus antique buckles – are set for auction offering an eclectic mix for collectors.
The items, which date from the 1900s to 1950s, will be offered in 14 lots by Hansons Auctioneers. They include everything from Victorian glass buttons to Art Deco and Victorian lustres, some presented on cards. There is also a large collection of Celluloid and Bakelite buttons including carved examples.
Notty Honrblower, vintage textiles and clothing consultant for Hansons Auctioneers, said: “It’s a truly marvellous collection and very diverse. For example, there’s an interesting collection of wooden buttons and toggles, leather football buttons and a large collection of Mother of Pearl buttons.
“I’m particularly excited by an Oriental – Chinese or Japanese – collection of Ovoid beads, some decorated with 22ct gold.
“The eclectic mix also includes Murano glass and Venetian beads, trade beads of various colours and sizes, French jet and black glass buttons and some bracelet panels and cards in jet.
“I have also uncovered a pair of agate waistcoat buttons, white metal buttons, livery and military buttons, treble gilt enamel crested buttons, large Abalone buttons and shell buttons. In addition, we will be offering a large collection of buckles which also date back to the 1900s.”

Time to sell your designer bags, scarves and clothes?
Notty says: “Check out your wardrobes because vintage designer wares and quality makes are selling well in Hansons’ textiles sales. For example, vintage Laura Ashley is in hot demand. Buyers just can’t get enough of the late great Welsh designers early florals which were designed by her and based on Victorian rural dresses worn during the mid 1800s.
“Bidders are keen on 1950s dresses, especially examples from the early part of the decade. Tweeds are also making a revival. To give you some examples of what can be achieved at auction, a beautiful silk scarf of Chinese origin made £1,000 at Hansons. Plus, a Queen Victoria nightdress and bloomers which belonged to her daughter Princess Beatrice sold for £4,000 to a buyer in the Caribbean.”
